Such re-licensed DVDs may not be sold in Thailand, - much to the annoyance of Thai DVD vendors.

About Sub Titles - DVD Players - World DVD Zones
Please bear in mind that unless you have a DVD player which is capable of playing both PAL & NTSC formats for all world zones, you will need to make sure your intended purchase is encoded for your particular world zone.
VCDs are video compact discs. A movie is accommodated on a 2 disc set. A movie on VCD is always cheaper than a DVD, but the quality is just as good. VCDs can play on virtually any DVD player, in the world. However, before selecting a VCD option, ensure it has subtitles.
Americans, Canadians - and anyone else for that matter, can buy 2 models of Philips DVD player for $55.99 & $62.99, which will play all zone movies from around the world at Amazon
Even less expensive at $39.95 is a player from CineEast.com, with some excellent features. All of the players have dual voltages, enabling them to be used anywhere. [9/2009]
Your TV set should also be capable of playing NTSC and PAL formats for attached video devices. Most modern TV sets have this capability.
If you do not have a DVD player that plays both NTSC and Pal formats for all world zones, you will need to check the DVD format details on their descriptions before you order.

If your zone is not shown, use the vendor's search engine to re-search the title of the movie, to display all versions they have on offer. If you have an all zones DVD player that plays both NTSC and PAL formats, you can buy any DVD advertised.
Nearly all of the DVDs at Amazon and EBay are zone 1 and will suit American and Canadian DVD buyers with standard zone 1 players.
Note:- Some vendors such as Ethaicd.com Bangkok include free international postage in their price. Note that some vendors such as Yesasia.com and DVDAsian.com only offer free postage with 3 or more DVD orders. Postage is an add on cost with most vendors, - so if postage is included, it reduces the overall cost of the DVD.
If you have a spare DVD player, you may be able to convert it into an all zone player, at no cost, according to this website.
Or, you can download free DVDXPlayer to play all region DVDs on your computer.
It is rare for an all zones player to refuse to play a DVD, suggesting "zone incompatibility". If this does happen, you can play the DVD on your computer. If you have DVD burner software, such as DVD-Cloner 7, which alters the zones on it's copies to zone 0, you will be able to play a copy immediately. DVD-Cloner 6 also removes encryption protection, enabling virtually almost every DVD to be copied.

Now, on to the the movies ....
Dorm 2006
Dorm or Dek Hor 2006 is an outstanding movie and enjoys a lot of coverage on the Net, especially as torrent downloads, but there is nothing like having the actual movie on disc.
The movie stars young actor Charlie Trairat in this his 4th movie, and he is outstanding in his role as Chatree (Ton) who is sent mid term to an austere boarding school, so that his father can carry on an affair with the family maid, without Chatree being in the way.
It turns out that the school dormitory is haunted by ghosts, but in particular by the ghost of a former student "Vichien" who drowned in the school swimming pool. Charlie's co-star is Michael Sirachuch Chienthaworn , who plays the role of "Vichien".
The movie was directed by Sangyos Sugmakanan.
Now you might think this movie to be just yet another Thai ghost movie, - but you would be wrong. You will be surprised at how different this movie is, to other Thai ghost movies.

Fan Chan or My Girl
Fan Chan 2003 also features Charlie Trairat of "Dorm". This was Charlie's 3rd movie and in it, his co star is Focus Jirakul.
A few years after he made "Dorm" he starred with Focus Jirakul in "Hormones" as a young teen. Unfortunately, "Hormones" is not available with English subtitles. Though I have seen mention of a Taiwan version, but have never been able to source it.
"Fan Chan" is Thailand's most loved movie. In 2003 it was the domestic box office hit, earning 140 million baht.
Charlie stars as the boy, Jeab who is the best friend of Noi Naa (Focus Jirakul).
The storyline starts with a young adult Jaeb, being invited to the wedding of his childhood sweetheart Noi Naa.
Then, the period goes back to their childhood, and the good times they had together, until the rift in their friendship, and Noi Naa and her parents moving to a distant province.
It isn't until the wedding, that they meet up again.
This movie is a MUST, - get it while you can ........

The Love of Siam 2007
The Love of Siam is currently available with English subtitles as a 3 disc "Director's Cut" set, or as a single DVD.
The movie launched the career of now hot teen star, Mario Maurer. He co-stars with Witwisit Hiranyawongkul.
In 2008 Mario Maurer was again the star of his next movie "Friendship".
Mario is the son of a Thai Chinese mother and German father, hence the good looks.
The story is about two teen boys who have long been best friends, living in the suburbs of Bangkok. Mario Maurer plays the role of "Tong" and Witwisit Hiranyawongkul the role of "Mew".
Serenity is disrupted when Tong's older sister goes on a jungle trip, and becomes lost.
The shattered family moves away from the city, thus separating the two best friends.
Years later, with the boys now in their late teens, they meet up once again.
One of them is the leader of an aspiring boy band, and has an assistant who looks remarkably like the missing sister who was lost in the jungle.
The two boys must deal with their families, and social lives, as well as manage their feelings for each other.
Because of a kissing scene between the two boys, many have perceived this to be a "gay" movie. You must decide for yourself, whether to tag it as such.
The Director decided not to promote the movie as such, with the hope that a wider audience would see much more in the production than that particular issue.
This is in every way one of the best Thai movies I have seen. It is world class. The Director and all involved with this movie should be proud of it.
At times sad, - at times tender, with a semi sweet conclusion, that leaves one feeling there should have been a happier ending for both boys.

Friendship 2008
Friendship 2008 was Mario Maurer's next movie, after "The Love of Siam".
This movie is a teen romance, but one should not disregard the movie because of this. It will appeal not only to a teen audience, but to those who have an interest in young people.
The Director seemed indecisive in making this movie, as to whether it would be a comedy, or a drama. So he tired to make it both, and it doesn't quite work.
Nevertheless, it is a good movie, though not a great movie.
If you managed to get hold of a copy of "The Love of Siam", you will want to see Mario Maurer in this movie too. And if you couldn't find a copy of the movie for less than $55, - here is a chance to experience teen star Mario Maurer at a much cheaper price.
The storyline starts after a film shoot, when a school class re-union is planned. When the re-union take place, the adult "Singha" played by Thai pop singer Jetrin meets up with his old school friends.
He is reminded of his first love, Mituna, who was thought by all at school to be a snob, as she seldom spoke to anyone.
But what was behind this persona, that caused her to seem to be like this? Singha tries to find out all he can about her.
The movie now goes back in time to Singha's schooldays, and Mario Maurer re-lives the days when he fell in love with Mituna.

Shutter 2004
Shutter 2004 is the ultimate horror ghost movie Thailand has produced. It has scarred the wits out of just about everyone who has seen it. On the big screen, I can imagine cinema patrons jumping out of there seats, or covering their eyes in fright.
Along with Fan Chan, Shutter is likely to be one of the most memorable movies the country has produced.
Overseas, this particular movie has already developed cult status, and is widely available with English subtitles, though the Thai DVD release did not incorporate them.
The storyline begins with a couple "Thun" Ananda Everingham a young photographer and "Jane" Natthaweeranuch Thongmee driving a car along a street, and accidentally running down a woman who was instantly killed.
The couple become hit and run drivers, as the decide the best thing to do is leave the scene of the accident quickly.
Later Thun discovers that his photos quite mysteriously develop shadows, that he recognizes as the shape of the dead woman's face.
The couple discover a terrifying connection between the shadows and photos.
Note:- There are versions of "Shutter" on the market. I note that ethaicd.com also sells a Japanese actor version, and there seems to be an American version. Make sure the actors you see on covers are those mentioned above.

Tears Of The Black Tiger 2002
Tears Of The Black Tiger - Fah talai jone of 2002 is one of the truly great movies from Thailand.
It is a romantic drama comedy, - yes all those genre combined, and all of those elements fit together to make one of the most enthralling Thai movies you will ever see.
It is a spoof on American western movies, and though you might think Thai cowboys an absurd proposition, this movie will change your thinking.
The visual effects are remarkable, as the Director had in mind particular colors, and pink is very prominent. Some technical wizardry in film reversal was apparently employed.
The storyline begins when "Rumpoey" Stella Malucchi sets out to meet up with her lover "Dum" Chartchai Ngamsan at a secret location. And though she waits for hours, he doesn't come. This segment is quite beautiful, and Rumpoey's pink dress shows off to full effect the coloring of the movie the Director set out to achieve.
They fight to be together, but Rumpoey's father has other ideas about that, and arranges a wedding for Rumpoey with the police chief, whom she despises.
His aim at her father's request is bring down Dum's underworld boss.
The film is truly funny and sad at the same time. Hard to imagine, but it's true.
Note: Don't wait too long to buy this movie, as it is no longer available in Thailand. The original Thai version did incorporate English subtitles.

When the monk and villagers consider how to recover the statue's head, Ting, who has never been to Bangkok decides to fight for the honour of the village and bring back the head.
The villagers believe the head was stolen by antiquities thieves, to be sold on the black market.
Tony Jaa displays tremendous physical prowess in this movie, that left all who saw it, gasping. And all achieved without wires, harnesses, or other aids.

Ong Bak 2 2008
Ong Bak 2 not only stars Tony Jaa, but this movie marks his career as a movie Director.
One would expect the movie to be a sequel to the original Ong Bak, but instead it is a prequel, set hundreds of year before in the time of the reign of King Naresuan.
Tian was born into nobility, but it was stripped away from him, when at the age of 10, lave traders killed his parents.
He is rescued and raised by a pirates guild and eventually becomes head of the clan.
His mind is set on revenge against the man who killed his parents.
The cast of this movie is large, and includes a huge herd of elephants. It is a movie of epic proportions.
Tony Jaa showcases himself as a master of a wide range of martial arts, whilst proving himself to be a promising Director. Though, the movie is not without its flaws.
It should not be confused with the movie "Tom Yum Goong" 2005 which Tony Jaa fans previously unofficially titled "Ong Bak 2".
